Learn Digital Photography - Nothing Creates Photography Success Like Success

One of the things I learnt early on in my teaching career was creating an atmosphere of inspiration and success. The old adage that says 'nothing creates success like success' is incredibly true when learning photography. Small amounts of success or at the very least, perceived success, are great motivators.

Recently I was teaching a course on creative photography. The class was small and fifty something in age with three of the students greying males. Maybe I was stereotyping a little, but I did feel that I was going to have to work hard and push myself to the limits. But what I ended up doing was pushing them to their limits and what a great result was achieved. This is what helped created success.

1. Find a subject and shoot it in a hundred different ways

When I gave them this assignment after the first class I could see in their eyes that they thought it was impossible. This exercise is my all time favourite when teaching a photography class. The words one hundred seem to signify impossible yet it really challenges the students. What this does is push them to the limits and get them thinking outside the box. Normally when asked to shoot an image one will take half a dozen or so images and there it is. When you are forced to find new angles and ideas the creativity starts to come out and by image number 47 or 68 perhaps, it really begins to work. Once these images have been shot, the range to choose from for a top image is incredible. Invariably all of the students have got great photos and this is the beginning of their success.

2. Choose a stiffer assignment like a theme

Part two along the creation path of success in photography is a slightly stiffer assignment like a theme or a concept shoot. I tell them I need five photos of theme of their choice. Each image must be strongly connected to the others via a theme. Now all of a sudden they realise the possibilities of the 100 photo shoot and start to get really creative. Again the results bring a real sense of success to each student. They are starting to feed off the success of each assignment and begin believing in their photographic abilities. Nothing has changed in who they are except that they now have self belief.

3. Give them a photographic brief for a product shoot

By this stage they believe they can do anything so I hit them with a tough assignment that gets them thinking and challenges that self belief. I gave them a concept and told them to shoot five images around the concept. But, because they have come such a long way and have seen that they can create great images they are open to the assignment despite its toughness. There you have it, they deliver and create images that wouldn't look out of place in a glossy magazine.

What I am trying to illustrate here is that in your learning journey set yourself assignments that are reasonable and you can successfully attain. Once you see your potential and achieve the little successes, each one will create more success and lead you deeper along your photography journey. The by-product of all this is that gradually the self belief increases, you become more successful and your images improve greatly. Happy shooting!

The Art Of Backlighting

Contrary to popular belief stunning photographs can be taken when shooting into the light. Whilst this may contradict advice given to beginners to always shoot with the light coming from behind the camera the art of backlighting is a technique that can produce wonderful images. However, many nature photographers are intimidated by the idea of pointing the camera towards the light and shy away from many worthwhile opportunities.

There is much to consider when using this technique if frustration and disappointment are to be avoided. However, once mastered there is little doubt that backlighting can be magical and will add both drama and visual impact to your photographs and diversity and interest to your portfolio. There are many subjects to try, my favourites are translucent flowers and foliage or rim lighting of animals and birds. Backlighting will enhance mist, rain and haze adding creativity and atmosphere to landscape images.

The two most challenging aspects of photographing backlit subjects are to adequately eliminate flare and ensure correct exposure. These concerns can be allayed with a little practice, good technique and an understanding of the exposure process.

Flare gives rise to a loss of definition and is probably the most significant area requiring attention, so a measured and methodical approach is needed. It is produced when intense rays of light hit the front element of the lens causing excessive lens refraction, this leads to specula highlights, image softening and loss of definition. Clearly this is to be avoided and there are several ways to overcome this undesirable effect.

Lenses show individual characteristics but in general the more lens elements used in their construction the more vulnerable they will be to flare. With this in mind zoom lenses are more likely to be flare susceptible that prime fixed focal length lenses. Lens coatings also have an impact on flare, modern multi coated lenses consistently outperform earlier models and this alone can significantly reduce most potential flare problems.

In many backlighting situations using a designated lens hood will greatly improve the chances of eliminating flare by keeping stray light from striking the front element of the lens. Indeed, the use of a good quality lens hood can improve saturation in all images.

Having taken the above precautions a final visual inspection of the image through the viewfinder, preferably with the lens stopped down, will show any remaining areas of softness or highlights resulting from flare. This may only require a slight repositioning of the camera to eliminate.

The other challenge in photographing backlit subjects is how best to handle exposure. Overexposure is a common problem in backlighting, as the brightly-lit background will overly influence the camera's meter; this will turn the subject very dark, indeed almost silhouette like.

Exposure compensation is the answer and it is best to give between one and two stops extra exposure from the 'normal' exposure suggested by the camera. Alternatively, take a spot meter reading from the shadow area and expose at the camera's reading this should require no compensation. As exposure for backlit subjects is tricky it is best to practice various exposure metering patterns and overrides until you are comfortable in approaching various back lighting opportunities that present themselves.

So, nature photographers, there really is no excuse for not getting out there, there is an endless variety of subjects waiting to be found and with care they can become some of your most creative and satisfying images.

The HTC Google Nexus One Looks Like It's Worth the Hype

Released in January 2010, the HTC manufactured Google Nexus One has been one of the most anticipated mobile phone releases since the Apple iPhone. A plethora of advanced applications and its Android operating system, coupled with the HTC built quality, the Google Nexus One is sure to be a hit. The fact that internet giants Google have put their name on a phone indicates that there will surely be no compromises with this handset.

The Google Nexus One measures 119x59.8mm and is just 11.5mm thick. It weighs in at 130g so is comfortable to hold and operate. The large 3.7" AMOLED capacitive touchscreen displays 480x800 pixels in WVGA resolution offering unparalleled display clarity and brightness. An accelerometer is built into the phone which senses when the phone has been tilted and rotates the onscreen image accordingly so it can be viewed in both portrait and landscape forms. Trackball navigation is included as support to the touchscreen navigation, similar to that found on several Blackberry Models.

Users are alerted to incoming calls and messages via vibration and ringing with the option to use MP3 music files as ringtones. A speakerphone is included allowing hands free communication. A 3.5mm audio jack can be used for hands free kits as well as listening to music with a pair of compatible headphones.

Internal memory in the Google Nexus One is 512MB RAM and 512MB ROM. A microSD slot is found on the handset with 4GB of memory included. This can, however, be expanded to up to 32GB allowing plenty of storage for media files, applications, contact info and other files.

A wide range of connectivity options is available with the handset. GPRS and EDGE are included, both in Class 10 versions. HSDPA is available at speeds of up to 7.2Mbps and HSUPA at up to 2Mbps. WiFi access allows users to take advantage of various hotspots at various locations around the country. Bluetooth v2.1 is installed as standard enabling direct transfer of files and data between Bluetooth compatible devices.

The Google Nexus One is equipped with a camera boasting 5MP which operates at a pixel resolution of 2560x1920 pixels. Features of the camera include autofocus and LED flash, smile detection and the increasingly popular geo-tagging facility whereby users can tag the location where a picture was taken. Video can be recorded in D1 at 720x480 pixels at a rate of 20 frames per second. Pictures and videos can be directly uploaded to YouTube and Picasa via applications which allow direct access to these sites.

A whole host of available features make it easy to see why there has been so much hype about this phone. A range of music and video file formats are supported by the phone's media player. These can be easily transferred to and from a computer via the microUSB (v2.0) port. Extra features include noise cancellation with dedicated microphone, digital compass and voice memo recorder.

This range of applications and software requires some very capable hardware. A powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250 1 GHz processor certainly fits the bill, and adequately compliments the Android v2.1 operating system.

Many will see the HTC Google Nexus One as one of the first major rivals to Apple's iPhone 3G and its easy to see why.

How to Restore Computer Files That Were Deleted?

You won't believe how many times I get people asking me the question how do I retrieve files I have deleted off my computer. And it continues to amaze me how many people still don't have a clue of how to go about it. So for anyone out there, who needs to recover a lost file I am going to show you exactly how to restore computer files that were deleted below, so continue reading for answers...

Firstly I am going to explain why it is possible to restore deleted files. The reason your deleted files are still recoverable is due to the fact that files do not get permanently erased once you hit the delete button in Recycle Bin. What really happens is that the space that was occupied by the deleted file is freed-up and becomes listed as available re-usable space. Now until that space is taken up by new data, your old files are still there and can easily be brought back with the right tools.

What you are going to need is some good data recovery software to get the job done and I must say you should act as quickly as possible. The reason being is that most people are constantly downloading and installing new stuff to their computer, so it's only a matter of time before your old deleted files is lost forever.

So to increase your chances of recovery I recommend you DO NOT install or download anything new onto the drive you wish to recover your files from and grab a proper data recovery program asap.

Personally I use a tool called Data Recovery Pro to recover files that I have accidentally deleted off my hard drive, digital camera, iPod or usb card. It is very easy to use and is able to recover my lost files in most cases. The program is very easy to use and the best part is that its free to download, so you can check to see if your files are recoverable right now.

Therefore if you trying to figure out How to Restore Computer Files That Were Deleted then stop stressing as all you need is a good data recovery program. I would recommend a program called Data recovery Pro, that is because not only can it restore deleted files on your computer but also many other peripheral storage devices, such as your iPod, digital camera, usb card and many more. What to Look For When Buying a New Digital Camera

Have you been hit by the craze and would now want to own a digital camera? Or would you like to get a new one to replace your old camera? Now that digital cameras are everywhere, selecting from a number of choices has become more of a challenge. Before you decide to purchase, try to consider a couple of things first so you won't end up with regrets.

The first thing to consider in buying a camera is your budget. Determine first how much you can spend for a new camera before you consider the other aspects in buying one. After you have determined your budget, everything else will just follow. Cameras are available in different price ranges. You can purchase a good camera at cheaper prices but new models and those with finer features may cost a couple of dollars more.

In terms of features, you should choose the camera that will allow you to take better photos. Most digital cameras have pre-programmed scenes which you can change depending on what your subject is. The pre-programmed scenes are specific. If you will take portrait pictures or landscape pictures or even night shots, you can program your camera with the right setting so you'll be able to capture at best. These different scene settings are helpful in adjusting the light. You should also consider the optical zoom. The greater the optical zoom, the better. Camera zoom allows you to capture subjects even at a distance. The greater the camera zoom is, the sharper the object it can capture from a far. You should also choose a camera where the flash can be turned on or off so you can change the settings depending on your need for light.

Another thing that you should look into is the number of mega pixels and the image quality. High resolution cameras will allow you to print out clear large pictures. Even if you crop the picture with a large mega pixel, the outcome will still be as good. The disadvantage of having a high resolution camera is the trouble in file size. But you can always change the settings or you can do post processing and resize your files if you don't need it that large. Although image quality and mega pixel size are not directly related, you will find that larger resolutions can produce good quality large sized shots. A camera at 3 mega pixels is already good enough in terms or image quality.

Extra features such as waterproof and shock proof are also important in cameras. Cameras that are shock proof and waterproof are more favorable for frequent travelers. These extra features are helpful if you are concerned about protecting your camera as water and vibrations are two of the most common factors that cause cameras to breakdown.

When you buy a digital camera, make sure that you know how its features work. Always try to go back to your own needs. If you really need to buy a camera with a lot of settings and features, then go for the more advanced ones. But if you only want to take pictures for sharing purposes, then opt for the one that's user friendly. After all, buying a camera that you don't understand just won't work.

LG Viewty Vs LG Renoir

LG KU990, codenamed LG Viewty, was an instant hit among mobile phone users who wanted an extremely powerful camera phone with the functionalities of a touchscreen smartphone.

But the introduction of another LG masterpiece can provide another incentive for consumers. The LG KC910, also known as the LG Renoir, takes all the beautiful features of the Viewty and made some unique but very powerful improvements.

That is why LG continues to be a top competitor in the smartphone and camera phone industry. This company continues to produce excellently designed mobile phones packed with high technology features.

So here is a brief overview of the LG Viewty and what can you expect from the LG Renoir.

The Introduction of Accelerometer Technology

One of the best features of the Viewty is its efficient and fast response time to touch commands. It is one of the fastest touchscreen mobile phones in the market and you will not encounter performance issues with its interface.

The Renoir however puts this great performance into higher gear. LG introduced accelerometer technology into the Renoir. You can consider this as a significant improvement from the interface of the Viewty.

With an accelerometer, the display screen of the LG Renoir becomes smarter and more powerful. The screen will follow the movement of the device. So when you rotate the device, its screen will automatically adjust to conform to the positioning of the mobile phone.

The accelerometer will also allow you to play high impact games on the Renoir without experiencing screen degeneration or flickering.

Multimedia and Digital Camera Comparison

The LG Viewty is a pioneer in the 5 megapixel camera phone market. In fact, LG produced the Viewty to address the demand for mobile photography. It is no wonder that the image resolution of the Viewty camera is far superior to other camera phones. It also has a built-in strobe flash so you can take pictures even in low light environment.

If you have been satisfied by the superior camera quality of the Viewty, then you will surely enjoy the improvements made by LG on its Renoir. The LG Renoir has an amazing 8 megapixels, superior focus, and intelligent digital camera with xenon flash.

The Renoir features intelligent camera functions such as the beauty shot, smile shot, blink detector, and face recognition.

Resolving Connectivity Issues

A major criticism hurled against the Viewty is its lack of Wi-Fi connectivity. The Renoir however resolved this problem with proper support for Wi-Fi connections. You can now easily establish connection with a Wi-Fi network thus improving the mobility of your device.

The Renoir is also supported on HSDPA networks and can establish up to 7.2 Mbps connections depending on the amount of network traffic. With such new feature, the Renoir would be the more appropriate device for mobile computing.

The LG Viewty and LG Renoir are two of the most highly productive smartphones in the market. Both can offer good performance but you can enjoy the significant upgrades made by LG on its Renoir model.
